Hunt is built on open-source software made by thousands of people. This page explains the main projects Hunt uses, the licences they come under, and where to find the full list of components and their licence texts.
The full list
- In Hunt Browser on a computer or Android: type
hunt://creditsin the address bar. It lists every component of the browser, with its licence text. - In Chrome or Edge, with the Hunt extension:
chrome://credits(oredge://credits) lists the components of your browser, which are licensed by Google or Microsoft. The extension's own components are listed on this page. - On iPhone and iPad: the components are listed on this page.
Chromium
Hunt Browser for Windows, Mac and Android is based on Chromium, the open-source browser project led by Google, which Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are also built on. Chromium's own code is under a BSD-style licence: Copyright The Chromium Authors. Chromium includes many third-party components under their own licences, including:
| Licence | Examples of what it covers |
|---|---|
| BSD-style licences | Chromium itself, V8 (the JavaScript engine), Skia (graphics) |
| GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) 2.1 | Parts of Blink, the web page engine, which came from WebKit and KHTML; FFmpeg's audio and video decoders |
| Mozilla Public License (MPL) 2.0 | A few components, listed at hunt://credits |
| Apache License 2.0 | Crashpad (crash reporting), Abseil and others |
| MIT License | Many smaller libraries |
| Others | ICU (Unicode licence), zlib, libpng, FreeType and more, listed at hunt://credits |
We add our own changes on top of Chromium for Hunt's branding, the built-in Hunt extension, the updater, the sidebar and performance settings. Our changes do not change the licences of Chromium's components.
WebKit (iPhone and iPad)
Apple requires browsers on iPhone and iPad to use WebKit. Hunt for iPhone and iPad uses the WebKit framework that is part of iOS and iPadOS, under Apple's terms. WebKit itself is open source, under the LGPL 2.1 and BSD licences.
Getting the source code
Where a licence, such as the LGPL or MPL, requires us to provide source code, you can ask for the source code of those components in the version of Hunt you have, by writing to hello@huntbrowser.com. We will provide it for at least three years after we last distribute that version, at no more than the cost of providing it. Chromium's source code is also available from the Chromium project at chromium.org.
